How to prepare midi files for synthesia (split hands)

I decided to use this blog to take some notes that might become useful to others, so here I go.

If you found some midi of a nice piano song you want to practice with synthesia but unfortunately all the notes are in one track so you can't learn each hand separately,
use

http://midieditor.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=downloads

to move the notes for one of the hands to a new track. Simply create another track, select the notes, Edit -> Move to track...
